Getting to the Root of Your Abnormal Bleeding
Some women have menstrual cycles that operate like clockwork. For others, the timing and symptoms are less predictable.
Whichever camp you fall into, though, if you’re dealing with bleeding that doesn’t seem to align with your body’s version of normal, it can be worrying.
At Prestige Healthcare OBGYN in Atlanta, Georgia, we can help you figure out what’s causing your abnormal bleeding.
Board-certified OB/GYNs Charis Trench-Simmons, MD, and Lorenza Simmons, MD, have a range of tools to help get to the root of the problem. Then, we tailor treatment to help you resolve the abnormal bleeding and protect your overall health.
Let’s take a closer look at how we can help here.
Diagnosing the cause of abnormal bleeding
Medical experts categorize bleeding between periods or an usually long or heavy flow as abnormal vaginal bleeding. By some estimates, this issue affects as many as one-third of all women.
Part of the reason this issue is so prevalent is that it can come from a number of places. Women might experience abnormal bleeding because of:
- Uterine fibroids
- Uterine polyps
- Infections like gonorrhea or chlamydia
- Pregnancy
- Changes in hormone levels
- Thyroid problems
- Some types of cancer
Here at our office, Dr. Simmons and Dr. Trench-Simmons can determine what’s behind your bleeding. We start by talking with you about your symptoms. Then, we generally perform a pelvic exam and a Pap test.
We tailor the diagnostic resources we use based on what we suspect might be causing your bleeding. If we think it might be fibroids, for example, we may perform a pelvic ultrasound. Or if we think a thyroid issue might be at play, we may directly test this organ’s function.
We partner with you to get to the root of your abnormal bleeding. That way, we can customize a treatment plan to resolve the bleeding.
Treating abnormal uterine bleeding
The treatment plan we recommend depends on the cause of your bleeding. If a hormonal shift is causing the issue, birth control medication can help stabilize your hormone levels and stop the bleeding.
Or if, for example, uterine fibroids are to blame, we can talk you through your options. You might choose minimally invasive uterine artery embolization to cut off blood supply to the fibroid, causing it to shrink.
We’re here to help you find out what’s causing your abnormal bleeding so we can treat it. To get started, call our office or book an appointment online today.
