Your Vagina After Kids (and How We Can Help Restore It)

Your Vagina After Kids (and How We Can Help Restore It)

Giving birth is a transformative experience. Many women say they’ve never felt so powerful. You hold your newborn, and your world feels complete.

That doesn’t mean everything is perfect, though. Vaginal childbirth wreaks havoc on your vagina. Even cesarean section (C-section) delivery can cause unwelcome changes down there.

To address issues such as looseness, dryness, and urinary incontinence, visit us at Prestige Healthcare OBGYN in Atlanta, Georgia. Charis Trench-Simmons, MD, Lorenza Simmons, MD, and our team provide treatment to help women rejuvenate their vaginas.

The most notable ways your vagina changes after kids

First, we want to highlight some of the biggest changes your vagina experiences after giving birth.

You’ll have temporary issues

For about a week after giving birth, you might have some bruising and swelling around your vagina. If you tore, you may have more pain to deal with for a longer period of time.

Whether you gave birth vaginally or via C-section, you should notice discharge called lochia. Lochia moves through stages. It starts as dark red blood, usually for the first few days. It lightens in color and flow over time, but you may have this discharge for up to two months

It may feel looser

Once you get past the first couple of months, pain and lochia should subside. Still, you might not feel like your old self. Childbirth can cause your pelvic floor muscles to lose tone. This makes your vagina feel looser.

You might be drier

Many women experience vaginal dryness after childbirth, especially if they breastfeed. Breastfeeding causes lower estrogen levels, and that results in less lubrication.

You might leak pee

Hormonal changes and the loss of pelvic floor tone can affect your bladder control. That’s true for women who gave birth vaginally and women who delivered by C-section. You may notice some involuntary urine leakage when you laugh, sneeze, or lift something heavy.

What you can do to reverse unwelcome vaginal changes

Fortunately, you’re not stuck with these issues. Dr. Simmons and Dr. Trench-Simmons offer treatment to help. It’s called the MonaLisa Touch® vaginal rejuvenation system.

This treatment option uses laser technology that we administer through a thin probe inserted into your vagina. It doesn’t hurt and doesn’t require any anesthesia, injections, or incisions. Plus, the treatment only takes about five minutes.

As the laser wavelengths pass through your vaginal walls, they encourage the production of collagen and elastin. These proteins support your tissue, helping it be more elastic. And treatment also helps restore lubrication.

For the best results, we typically recommend a series of three treatments six weeks apart. About 90% of women who used MonaLisa Touch say they saw improvement.

This treatment is safe to use once you’re three months postpartum. If you’re ready to explore MonaLisa Touch to reverse some of your vaginal changes after kids, call our office or book your visit online today.
